Freshman Retreat Recap
What happens when freshmen step away from the classroom and are given the opportunity to serve, worship, build community, and experience college life together? Last week, our ninth-grade students did exactly that during an overnight retreat at Northwest University. What began as a chance to experience a college campus became something much more meaningful as students served people in need, encouraged the university community, and grew together in their faith. Throughout the retreat, we had the privilege of watching our students live out who God has called them to be.
I'd like to share a bit more about our freshman retreat last week. This year, we partnered with Northwest University to give our students a unique college campus experience that helps them draw closer to God and have fun while doing so. During our overnight retreat last week, our freshmen served well, helping pack over 5,000 bags of groceries for those in need in the greater Tacoma-Seattle area.
They did this on their own and with college students, breaking a sweat and working incredibly hard. After that, with the sun already set, our freshmen helped lead the singing of songs with college students as they packed the bags into trucks to send around the South Sound to those in need. The impact wasn't just felt in the larger community; it was also felt on campus. The wife of the president of the university came up to me in the evening and told us how great it was to have our kids there at a soccer game we had attended earlier in the day, cheering on their students, and how she hoped that, for the sake of their university, she would get to have some of those kids here after high school graduation because of their energy and positive engagement. Finally, I got to see how this trip impacted students individually.
During the morning devotions after spending the night in the dorms, our students without lyrics joined in as we worshiped, singing loudly and engaging fully in acknowledging who God is and what that means for us. This retreat was a unique opportunity to see our students become who they were designed to be in real time, and it was good. Well done to our freshmen; thank you to Northwest University and Go Eagles. I look forward to our next impact report of what God is doing in our High School and beyond!
