Coach Lawyer Reflects on 13 Seasons at LCA

Dear LCA Community,
I would like to start off by saying thank you. Thank you for the amazing memories shared. Specifically, thank you to all of my basketball families over the years. Both boys and girls. The memories are endless, and the relationships are even deeper. From playing 1 on 5 on the side hoop against my JV Boys teams, strengthening their zone defense, to Mikey Clowe shouting “Papa Johns!” while shooting 3-pointers in practices AND games.

From Chelan trips with boys and girls, and then Salem in the summer with girls basketball. From going 0-20 my first season as a girls assistant coach, to multiple district playoff runs as head coach. And then what felt like the deepest pain of missing the state tournament due to a missed foul call by a ref, to 4 of our 8 players on our Girls Varsity team choosing to be baptized as a result of the ministry that took place on our team.

My heart is full.  Never in my life would I have imagined the blessing that coaching high school basketball would be for me. I am forever grateful to God for His goodness in my life.  It is with a heavy yet grateful heart that I share my resignation from coaching high school girls basketball at Life Christian Academy. My heart is heavy because I love the students of this school so much, but my heart is grateful because of the blessing the students and community have been in my life.  God has allowed me 13 memorable seasons between serving as the boys junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant, to serving our girls program as head coach.

Thank you to Mark Lovelady for believing in me, giving me my first coaching opportunity. For showing me the importance of discipleship through coaching. Ross Hjelseth, thank you for instilling the importance of shepherding students. To the many teachers who opened up their classroom for our team study tables, pregame dinners, and film session…thank you! To the many different athletic directors I’ve worked with over the years, thank you! To Mrs. Gibson, our current athletic director, I will forever be grateful to you for believing in our program. You stood on our behalf too many times to count. Thank you.

To my brother and friend, Coach Justin Murray... we really did it! We took on a task that neither of us wanted, but it was easily one of the most rewarding life decisions. We legitimately quit coaching, yet both found ourselves at a place of submitting to God's calling to continue serving. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for being my right hand.

And to the person who made the greatest sacrifice in all of this, my wife, Chelsea Lawyer. Thank you. The early mornings of zero class to late-night returns from away games. To then pushing me to step up as a girls head coach, knowing that it would demand even more of my time and energy. You have continuously made the selfless decision of encouraging me to pursue God’s calling to serve. I love you.

As I enter into a new season of life and ministry with my family, serving the community in ministry and coaching my kids’ sports teams, I am forever grateful. LCA is forever embedded into the fabric of who I am. It will always be a place I call home. I look forward to continuing to support our school, just from a new seat.

Thank you, LCA
