Course Description
First year French introduces students to the language and culture of French speaking peoples around the world. Foundational vocabulary and grammatical structures/patterns are presented as students study topics pertaining to everyday life. Students will acquire skills in listening and reading comprehension as well as in active conversation and some simple writing. Much of the class will be conducted in French with the goal of immersing students as much as possible into the language. Along with a textbook, DVDs and CD recordings will provide the student exposure to and practice with the language. An emphasis will be placed on gaining skills in pronunciation and producing simple sentences in the present tense. Assessment of skills will be based on written and oral work as well as on tests, quizzes, homework, and general participation in classroom activities. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities and projects.
