Next week we will examine Gatsby as a hero (though this is just as much Nick's story as it is Gatsby's) and then get started with our culminating essay.

Assignment

Work for Wednesday, 4/8:
  • The first order of business today is to create a Flipgrid video similar to the one you created at the end of TGG Chapter 3 in which you chose and explained your favorite line from Chapters 1-3.  This time, however, your video should include the following information:
    • Choose a short passage from Chapter 6 (1-5 sentences) that you find interesting and that conveys a strong sense of TONE (attitude of the speaker toward its subject).  In your video, which should be NO SHORTER THAN 1-1/2 MINUTES:
      1) give the page number and context of the quote, including who says it (the speaker) and what s/he's talking about (the subject)
      2) read the passage
      3) explain the tone of the speaker (see the attached tone list); identify words from the passage that help you understand the tone
      4) and tell what the significance of the passage and tone is (What does it tell us about the speaker? the subject?)
    • See Mrs. G's example under the Flipgrid assignment:  TGG Ch 6 Tone Passage:  https://flipgrid.com/ad77fbd8
    • This is due Thursday 4/9 at 9am.
  • Today you should also begin reading TGG Ch 7 and working on Study Questions for Ch 7 found in your One Note English 11 Homework folder.  Answer any 5 of the 8 questions posted.  Chapter 7 is longer than the other chapters, so don't procrastinate.  It is also the climax of the book, so you're definitely going to want to get reading it.  Study questions for Ch 7 will be due Friday at 5pm (I'm giving you a little extra time since it's a longer chapter).
  • Tomorrow we will meet for our first live class on a Zoom meeting at 1:20pm.  I will post the link for the meeting later today in instructions for Thursday.  Looking forward to seeing you all!

Write another TGG Literary Journal below your last two.  This journal (both paragraphs) should be on content from Chapters 4-5.  Due:  Friday, 3/27 at 8am.

NOTE:  Due to the ample feedback I gave you on your last two journals and the amount of time I'm finding it takes me to go back and reread and rescore journals, I have decided not to offer rewrite opportunities on the last three journals (Ch 4-5, 6-7, 8-9) you will write.  Sorry, but it's just too labor intensive.  If you have a specific question for me about your journal, please ask it before it's due.  You are welcome to email me today with any question you have.  I will be checking emails throughout the day.  Give me your very best the first time!

THIS IS THE LAST YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM ME UNTIL SUNDAY, APRIL 5, WHEN I WILL POST YOUR NEW ASSIGNMENT FOR MONDAY, APRIL 6.  I hope you enjoy your spring break and find some fun things to do.  Read a book you've been putting off reading.  I'm planning to read Frankenstein, which I've always wanted to read but never had or made the time to.   And watch some films that were made from classic books.  They're usually great stories.  Enjoy and stay well!

Assignment

Work for Wednesday, 3/18:
Hi, everyone!  Hope you had a good day off.  Now it's back to work ;-)

You should have finished reading TGG Chapter 3 by now.  If you want to read along as you listen to an Audiobook, you can find any number of recordings of the text on YouTube.  This one looks pretty good to me.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFGLXF1M4K4&list=PLmurByhpkCpl3UhgYdQ3X4H1bP9lF_Nle
You'll see that there's a recording for each chapter.  Or there's this one, which read a bit faster, that is the whole book in one recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Lz87f85Tp8

Today you have two things to finish:

1) Go to your Homework folder in our class notebook (English 11 2019-2020) in OneNote and answer the questions in page called "TGG Chapter 3 Study Questions."  These study questions help pull out some of the more important aspects of each chapter.  Do your best to answer them.  You will be receiving 1 point for attempting to answer the question and 1 point for a correct or reasonable answer for each question (10 points for each Study Questions set).  You do NOT need to find a quotation from the book to answer the questions (unless the question specifically asks for "evidence" or to give a quotation) and get full points, but you can certainly include quotations if you want.  Your answers are due tomorrow, Thursday, 3/19 at 8:00am.  (The assignment page on OneNote says Wednesday at 8:00am.  Ignore that.)

2) Watch this video summary and analysis of the chapter called "One Day Ahead." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38jrYDT2g0I&list=PLl1lVg0e2jeO7q-sStgH0C1mrHZ9Lg9_r&index=3.  the host has some really interesting insights and historical information.  Just watch the first 9:15 minutes of it.  The rest is for teachers and I am not really using that part for lesson planning.  You may also want to watch back to what he has to say for Chapters 1 and 2.  Also, please DO NOT watch ahead.  I'd like your first experience with the story to be through reading.  Afterwards, you can follow up with the videos.

You are also welcome to get started with your Chapter 3 Journal, which is due on Friday, 3/20 at 8:00am.  I am giving feedback on Journals from Chapters 1-2 as quickly as I can.  If you haven't received feedback from me by Friday, still plan to get your Ch 3 journal done by the deadline.  You will have a chance to revise your journals for more points once I score them.  NOTE:  Make sure that the thoughts in your journal are your own and NOT something you pick up from the "One Day Ahead" video.  I have watched the videos and will be able to tell the difference.

If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]

Make it a great day!--Mrs. G
