Description

Reading for Pleasure is a semester long elective course that will focus on providing students the opportunity to improve their reading skills simply by reading.  Students will be encouraged to regain or to grow in their love of reading through consistent, daily reading in class.  Students will be assessed for their current reading level and then again, at the end of the semester, for progress.  Students will work to understand and explore several different genres of literature including realistic fiction, science fiction, dystopian, poetry, historical fiction, Biography/autobiography/memoir, Classics, fantasy, non-fiction, and graphic novels as well as others. This course aims to aid students in developing a lifelong habit and appreciation for reading.  To this end, students will learn and develop a number of reading strategies to help them leave high school as motivated, self-sufficient readers prepared for future reading demands.

Assignment

Hello Reading students!  Today is an optional reading day for you.  You may certainly continue to read and log your pages, especially if you are behind a bit in your reading over the past few days.  Remember, I am asking you to commit to reading 4 days a week for 45-50 minutes per day and to log your entries.
But today, I would like you to think about preparing for our upcoming Book Talks which will be conducted over the next few days.  So here's your assignment:  Choose a book that you have read for Reading for Pleasure or one that you are currently reading for this class.  Stay away from talking about a book you have read for another class. Prepare a brief book talk.  I would encourage you to write down what you want to share.  Here's what you need to include in your book talk:  name of book, author, genre or type of book, who the main characters are, where and when the story takes place, a very brief summary of what the book is about (without giving away the ending).  Also tell us what you especially liked about the book or what you learned from reading it.  Finish out by telling us how long the book is and whether it is an easy, average, or challenging read.  If you want, you can mention the kind of vocabulary used (easy to understanding, difficult, lots of unknown words.....).  End your book talk by letting us know if you would recommend the book or not and why.  What would you give it in terms of stars:  a one?  a four?  a five?  Give us your rating.
Tomorrow I will post how we are going to give our Book Talks.  Hope you are all well!  I miss reading with you!

Hello Reading for Pleasure students!  I hope you are finding some enjoyment in continuing your reading each day.  It really can be a stress reducer...and sometimes a great escape for us. I finished my book last night at home, and will start on another tonight. Your assignment for Friday, March 20th is to again set aside 45-50 minutes to read from your own book or from something on myOn.  Continue to log the number of pages read (start and ending page) along with a brief summary of what you have read.  I will be asking you to turn your reading logs into me by the end of next week....so keep your log current.  Keep checking my teacher page for instructions on how to submit your reading logs.  I hope you all are adjusting to doing school at home. It will be lovely to have you back one of these days and be able to read together again.  Take care of yourselves!

Assignment

Hello Reading for Pleasure Students!  Hope you are all well.  I miss reading with you in class!  Here is the assignment for Thursday, March 19th:  Set aside 45-50 minutes today to read either from your own chosen book or from a book on myOn.  If you have forgotten how to log onto myOn, check the assignment from yesterday.  Please record either on your blue log or on a separate piece of paper your starting and ending page, the number of pages you read, and a brief summary of what you read.  Remember:  This is the evidence I will need from you in order to give you a grade for the class.  Enjoy your day!
