Reading strategies for tackling complex texts:
- Read aloud--Most students improve their comprehension when the hear what they are reading. Read it out loud to yourself or find the audio on line to follow along with. If you follow along to someone else's audio, you must still read with your eyes while listening.
- Chunking (asking: "what is the key idea?" after reading each paragraph)
- Key Word Search: underlining words that are repeated in a paragraph. Focusing on those ideas to help you figure out what the key idea is.
- Moving on: You don't have to understand every sentence. Just try to get the gist of each paragraph
