Personal Finance (Period 3) Assignments

Discuss what you have learned. You should touch on at least 5 of these subjects. This is you explaining what you've learned. How this class impacted you? How has it changed how you view finances and your future? I am looking for you to show me what you've learned throughout the semester and during our time together. Revise your cover letter and resume. Make sure you go through and correct any grammatical errors and that you ask myself or your parents for help. I am available for zoom sessions to go over your resume. Do not email me your resume or cover letter. I won't be able to get to all of your email inquiries. This week we are going to spend this time in creating a resume and cover letter. This is a very important skill to learn as you transition from high school and start looking for a job and a career!

 

Assignment Goals 

I want you to get a head start on building a resume so that you can use it later on when you start applying for work (for some of you, that's going to be really soon!). 

What is a resume and cover letter? A resume is, in essence, a summary of your work and academic experience. It’s given to potential employers to help them determine if you are qualified for an interview, to help them develop targeted interview questions (often, but not always), and to help them remember you after an interview. It’s usually designed with headings and bullet points to make it easy to read, and it should be professional and visually attractive because it is a representation of the work you are capable of producing.

You have to choose and highlight information carefully, because employers only spend an average of 30 seconds in an initial skim. You also need to tailor your resume to each job you apply to, creating a slightly different version of your resume, so you can present your qualifications as tightly linked with the exact desires of the particular employer.

A cover letter is a short letter that accompanies a resume, written from you to the potential employer. The goal of a cover letter is to convince the employer to look at your resume. It doesn’t need to rehash everything in the resume; it only needs to include just enough tantalizing detail to make the employer open your resume.

 

You are required to watch the videos posted this Sunday (5/10/20) over what are resumes, cover letters, common mistakes people make, and Dave Ramsey's video on how to find the Ideal job (there are five videos and they're located in posts). You are to submit both a resume and cover letter completed. I will be available for help. Please feel free to use the Microsoft word templates for help. Attached below are template examples of resumes and cover letters. Additionally, there are rubrics for both the cover letter and resume. 


Understand, this is probably your first time writing a resume/cover letter. I totally understand this. It will be far from perfect. Please do not feel like it needs to be perfect. You just need to fulfill the requirements of the rubrics. If you do that, I am sure you will be fine. I am sure you will have questions. Don't hesitate to reach out!
