Yearbook (Period 6) Assignments

Hello Yearbook Staff:  Thanks so much for helping out with the distribution of our books!  We've heard so many compliments on how beautiful the book is.  Well done, staff!  This is the last day of our school year, and it has been such a pleasure working with each and every one of you!  Over the summer, be thinking about a theme for next year's book, and keep your eyes open for design ideas that you may see in magazines or in other publications.  Also, if you want some more training in yearbook, there are a couple of free yearbook workshops being offered by Jostens this summer.....one on June 23-25 and another on July 14-16.  The cost is free.  You can check out the website at www.Jostens.com/YearbookWorkshops. Hello Staff:  We are coming to the end of our school year and wrapping things up.  Thank you to all of you who have come in this week to help distribute yearbooks to our MS and HS students. Today, Andrew and Ashley will be handing out books in the morning, and then Kat and Madi will be working in the afternoon.  evaluation Please remember to fill out the yearbook (attached to one of my teacher pages last week) by tomorrow June, 12th and send it to me.  We will use these evaluations to help plan for and improve our yearbooks next year. Hello Yearbook Staff:  Just a reminder that we are handing out yearbooks this week to HS and MS during The Great Exchange. Hello Yearbook staff!  Hope you had a great weekend!  It was so good seeing you on Zoom this past Friday!  I loved your individual spreads! This week we are asking you to volunteer to come in to school and help distribute our yearbooks.  This will take place Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.  Please let either Andrew or Jack know your availability to help with this.  We need to mark off the names of students as they receive their book and also make sure that all of the personalized books are handed out.  Thanks for all you have done to make our yearbook one we can all be proud of!  Take care!

Hello Yearbook Staff:  Please set aside from 1:30 until 2:30 to join us on Zoom for our last Yearbook class of the year.  We will share our final project spreads and celebrate your creativity and hard work at this time.  Be thinking about how you might be available to help with passing your yearbooks next week during the Great Exchange.  We will most likely do a morning shift from 9:00 to noon, and an afternoon shift from noon to 3:00 Monday through Thursday of next week.  Andrew and Jack will be organizing this event.  See you later today!

     Also, when you receive your yearbook, be sure to complete the yearbook evaluation that was posted on my teacher page last week, (May 29th, I believe).  This is a tool that we will use to make improvements and set goals for next year's yearbook.  

Hello Yearbook Staff:  Yesterday we passed out yearbooks to seniors, and will continue to do so at the senior events today and tomorrow.  Yearbooks will be passed out to the rest of the MS and HS next week during the Great Exchange.  Expect to hear from either Andrew or Jack about how you might help with our distribution. Today, please complete your final yearbook spread on yourself.  These are due tomorrow, and we will share them at our final class Zoom meeting.....tomorrow, Friday, June 5th at 1:30.  Watch for your Zoom invitation. Hello mighty Yearbook Staff!   The books are all ready, with our supplement pages glued in!  Ryan, Paige, Kat, Andrew, Jack, and Marcus worked hard yesterday afternoon to complete the job.....and the book is beautiful!  Well done, staff!  Seniors will be receiving their yearbooks tomorrow, Wednesday, during a drive-thru parade.  Next week, we will be looking for volunteers from among you to help hand out yearbooks to the rest of the HS and MS Monday through Thursday.  From what I understand, this will also be a curbside pick-up....and so we will need staff members on hand to run out to cars, get names of students, cross them off our list, and hand out the yearbook.  Andrew and Jack will be coordinating all of this.

Hello Yearbook Staff!  Hope you had a great weekend!  We are getting ready to pass out yearbooks to our seniors this week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday.  You may be asked to come in sometime this week to help glue supplement pages into our books.  We will be distributing books to the rest of the HS and MS during the week of June 8th through 12th at the Great Supply Exchange.  Watch for ways that you can help with this.  This week continue to work on your final yearbook project....a double-page spread on you!  These are due on Friday June 5th.  Also when you receive your own yearbook, 29th, please complete the yearbook evaluation document that was attached to my teacher page from May 29th and return these evaluations to me before June 12th.  These are so helpful for us as we seek to constantly improve our yearbook. Hello mighty yearbook staff!  Our books are in and our supplements are arriving today!  Please watch for details about how we will insert our supplement pages into our books.  We will be distributing books to our seniors this next week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday....and then to all other students during the week of June 8th through 11th.  For today, keep working on your final yearbook project.....a double-page spread all about you.  If you need more details on this project, go back to my teacher page for May 21st to find an attached document. Seniors, please turn your project in to me no later than Monday, June 1st. For the rest of you, your projects should be finished up by Friday, June 5th.

     Also, when you actually get your copy of your yearbook, please fill out the attached Yearbook Evaluation.  We complete these each year to improve what we do.  These are due by Thursday, June 11th.

Hello Yearbook Staff:. Hope you can join us today in the LCA parking lot at 1:30 for our Yearbook Celebration. Be sure to stay in your cars and park 6 feet away from one another. Windows may be rolled down. Hello wonderful yearbook staff!  We submitted our supplement pages yesterday and have officially finished our book!  Congratulations on a job well done!  We are looking to celebrate that accomplishment with a yearbook party, hopefully this Friday afternoon in the school parking lot.  Look for more details to come both from me and your editors.  We will also be working on the Senior Memory Book in the days to come....(we are setting this up).....and on your final yearbook project.  Keep checking my teacher page for details.....but today....no assignment.

Hello Yearbook Staff!  Hope you enjoyed the lovely, warm Mother's Day weekend!  Hopefully, you received my email to all of you.  Today it is imperative that you seriously work on your assigned supplement pages to finish them up.  These pages are due this Friday, May 15th, so we can send them to print. If you need help contacting a student or a teacher to do an interview or to secure photos, please let me know.  The layouts look great.....but we need to finish them up as soon as possible.  We will most likely meet together at the end of the week via Zoom to discuss these pages.  If you have already completed your assigned spreads, then please begin to proof those pages that are complete.  Take notes on what needs to be corrected, changed, or edited.  I know it's a busy week with AP testing, so let's pray for one another that God would enable us to finish well. Hello Yearbook Staff!  Great job planning for your supplement pages!  I've enjoyed seeing your ideas and potential headlines!  Here's what you need to be working on today:  Please finalize a design for your assigned pages with a headline by today, Friday April 17th.  Paige and Ryan will be going through these pages this weekend and will be leaving some comments for you.  Please check your pages from time to time to be aware of what they have written.  Also, please know that we (Paige, Ryan, and I) are able to see who has been working the the pages.  We would like to see that both partners assigned to the spread are contributing to the work in an ongoing way. COVID-19 Facts/Exposition (Jack & Ryan)

- Start a timeline of coronavirus events.

- Determine what you want to cover on the page (the virus’ origins, quarantines, “flattening the curve,” etc.)

 

Coronacation/Spring Break (Gillian & Katherine)

- Create a list of 10 (or more) students in both high school and middle school with unique things they did during the quarantine.

 

Teachers with Technology (Kat & Thomas)

- Create a list of 10 teachers and the unique method/activity they’ve started to continue teaching (e.g. Weiman’s YouTube channel, McBeath’s morning class, etc.)

 

New Students - Q&A (Ashley & Paige)

- Confirm the list of new students

- Come up with 10 unique questions for at least 2 of the new students (each, 40 total between the two of you)

 

Play (Madi S. & Marcus)

- List 7 cast/crew members that you’ll want to cover on the page and how you’ll be covering them (quotes, article interviews, etc.) with only 2 of the 7 being seniors.

- Check photos to ensure that everyone in the production is in at least 1 of photos to be used on the page.

- Consider a poll of some sort of the page.

*Note: This page has the potential to cover many of the middle schoolers. Please try to reflect the middle school involvement on the page.

 

Formal/Bingo (Madi H. & Josh)

- Decide if you’ll be doing 2 bingo sheets or just 1 that utilizes the double page spread.

- Create a list of 20 Bingo items that relate to the current quarantine/LCA classes at home.

*Note: You’ll need at least 24 items if you do a single bingo card. If you do two bingo cards, you’ll need about 48-50. Try to split that number between yourselves and make sure you don’t have duplicate items.

 

Which LCA Staffer Are You? (Andrew & Kat)

- Create a list of 6 staff members for the final results (try to vary the options to include a teacher, coach, administrator, director, etc.)

*Note: Be sure that your choices are people that we can reach out to for answers.

 

Wrap Up (Jack & Andrew)

- Create a list of 7-10 ideas for what you’ll want to cover for the wrap up (Homecoming dance, state-going teams, etc.)

- Brainstorm one person from each idea that can give an insider quote about the event

Hopefully you all had a chance to meet with Ryan and Paige via Zoom to discuss the vision and some plans for your assigned pages. Please come up with an initial layout for your page and an idea for a headline.  Think through what you will need to do to complete the page:  interviews, photos, design elements, article, how to tell the story, and relating your page in some way to our theme, "Our Life in Color."  Have a great day!

Notes (will be discussed during conferences)

- Keep all design elements 1 to 2 picas away from the outside edges of the page. The supplement is smaller than the rest of the book, so it may cut the edges a little closer.

- Page numbers and their folios are locked on the pages. DO NOT MOVE THEM!

Hopefully we will get started with designing our supplement pages next week.  We will also be figuring out how to get our supplement inserted into our books and how to distribute them at the end of the school year.....but that's for another day.

Hello Yearbook staff!  Hope you are all doing well.  Continue to think of creative spreads for our supplement pages....something like "25 things you can do to keep yourself occupied while at home during the corona virus outbreak".  Send your ideas to Paige and Ryan by Friday, March 20th. I miss all of you!!

Congratulations on finishing the yearbook!....at least the part that is printed by Jostens. Well done last night!!  Mr. Paffrath emailed me this morning to say that he had submitted our pages.  

     Here's the assignment:  Each staff member come up with a list of 5 creative ideas that we might cover on a double page spread in our supplement.  The supplement is typically due the first or second week in May, as there is a 2 week turnaround in the printing of these pages.  For those of you new to yearbook, our supplement is printed locally and delivered to us by Mr. Paffrath. We then glue it into the yearbooks that arrive from the Jostens plant.  Email your ideas to me and also to Ryan and Paige.  They are due this Friday, March 20th.

In class (3-16-2020):  Celebrated our 4th appearance in Jostens Lookbook with cookies brought in by Mr. Paffrath.  Special recognition goes to Jack Pierson for his winning cover design!  Students continued to work on assigned pages due today for submission.  Be prepared to stay late tonight to finish up our book. In class (2-26-2020):  Students went to The Stay as a reward for meeting our deadline this week.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos at school and sporting events including the school play and the upcoming regional basketball game.  

In class (2-25-2020):  Went over events that we need to cover this week for our yearbook pages.  Talked through assignments for our upcoming deadline on March 16.  Students began working on layouts and headlines for their new spreads.  Assigned:  Have a layout completed for your assigned page or pages by class time tomorrow in order to go to The Stay.

In class (2-24-2020):  Went over corrections that need to be made on pages.  Students proofed and edited pages for our deadline tonight.  Assigned:  If possible, stay tonight to work on pages for our deadline tonight.  All 44 pages must be submitted before midnight.  

In class (2-21-2020):  Students worked on proofing and editing our 44 pages to be submitted on Monday, Feb. 24th.  Assigned:  Over the weekend, read through our pages and make a note of any changes that need to be made.  Be prepared to stay late on Monday Feb. 24th to submit our pages for our deadline.

In class (2-20-2020):  Went over coverage of S.E.W. Students worked on proofing and editing pages for our Monday deadline.  Assigned:  Continue to proof and edit pages, making all necessary corrections on your assigned pages. Also continue to take photos at chapel this week.

In class (2-19-2020):  Went over coverage, especially this week's S.E.W.  Began the proofing and editing process of completed pages for our upcoming deadline.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos at chapels this week.  Begin to look over our completed pages for any edits. In class (2-18-2020):  Went over our coverage of S.E.W. for the week.  Assigned pages were due today along with a page sponsorship.  Students worked on finishing up any incomplete pages and then began the proofing and editing process.  Assigned:  Take pictures at Spiritual Emphasis Week chapels, as well as at other school or sporting events.  

In class (2-13-2020):  Several staff members helped our elementary school yearbookers take photos during recess. The rest of the staff continued to work on assigned pages. Due Thursday, Jan.30.  Continue to promote our yearbook personalization offer that will end this Thursday, Jan. 30.

In class (12-18-19):  Went over what we need to cover for our yearbook pages.  Proofed and did final editing on 2 of our spreads that are completed.  Students continued to work on their assigned pages.  Approved our cover and finalized plans for advertising and promoting senior recognition ads and personalization. Assigned:  Upload and and all photos. Continue to take photos of school events, decorations, chapel, etc. Complete any interviews that you need for your assigned pages.

In class (12-17-19):  Went over upcoming events that we need to cover for our pages.  Did a final proofing and editing of our girls volleyball page and our high school football spread.  Students continued to work on their assigned spreads for our upcoming Jan. 20th deadline.  Assigned:  Take pictures for your assigned spread and have your interviews completed by the end of this week.  

In  class (12-16-19):  Went over events that we need to cover for our pages.  Proofed and edited the boys and girls soccer spreads in preparation for submitting them.  Students continued to work on their assigned pages for our next deadline. Finalized letters and brochures advertising yearbook personalization and senior ads. Assigned:  Continue taking photos of Spirit Week attire as well as of school and sporting events.

Students took a yearbook quiz to earn Pica Points.  Introduced the use of page sponsors in our yearbook.  Discussed how to write good captions (see handouts), and students were given the opportunity to write a caption for one of the photos on their pages.  Assigned: Secure one page sponsor for our yearbook before Thanksgiving.  Continue to take pictures of school and sporting events.  Please upload any and all yearbook photos.  Begin writing captions for your assigned pages.

In class (10-8-19):  Went over the school and sporting events that we need to cover, especially Macho Man tomorrow.  Went to The Stay in honor of National Yearbook Week.  Assigned:  Continue to take pictures of school and sporting events.  Also continue to work on your sample cover design, implementing one of our cover ideas.  Due by Friday, Oct. 11.

In class (10-7-19):  Went over Homecoming and sporting events for staff to cover this week.  Reviewed the 2 cover designs under consideration.  Students worked on producing sample covers based on these 2 designs.  Assigned:  Have a sample cover ready to submit by the end of the week.  Continue taking photos at all Homecoming events, sporting events, Spirit dress, and the 3rd floor hallway throughout the week.

In class (10-3-19):  Went over the October calendar noting upcoming events to cover.  Went over next week's Homecoming calendar and the events we want to cover and how we plan to do so.  Students continued to present their cover ideas in preparation for Mr. Paffrath's visit tomorrow.  Discussed what things we have noted on the new website that we want to call attention to with Mr. Paffrath.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos of school and sporting events.

In class (10-2-19):  Went over events that need to be covered over the next few days.Students shared and discussed the photos they took yesterday on our scavenger hunt illustrating rule of thirds, worm's eye view, bird's eye view, macro-photography, symmetry, and following lines or curves.  Passed out our list of verbal spin-offs for our theme this year.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos at every opportunity.  Write a paragraph that explains why our chosen theme fits or relates to our school (handout).  Due tomorrow.

In class (10-1-19):  Went over the October calendar noting upcoming events.  Discussed coverage of the NHS Induction ceremony tonight as well as upcoming sporting events.  Students went on a photography scavenger hunt with a partner taking photos of the people and things according to their group assignment.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos of school events at every opportunity.

In class (9-30-19):  Went over what we need to cover this week in terms of school and sporting events.  Students shared their cover designs with the class.  Assigned:  Continue to take photos at every opportunity of the school and sporting events that you attend.  

In class (9-27-19):  Students continued to work on creating several cover designs for our chosen theme.  Assigned:  Continue to take pictures at school and sporting events.  Continue working on your cover designs which are due by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.

In class (9-26-19):  Went over school and sporting events that we need to cover over the next few days.  Students worked on cover designs for our yearbook theme.  Assigned:  Have at least one cover design completed by Wednesday, Oct. 2.  Continue to take photos at school and sporting events as possible.

In class (9-23-19):  Worked on theme and cover ideas/designs.  Students continued building skills on our website by working on duplicating a yearbook page.  Assigned:  Take photos at school and sporting events this week.Continue working on a cover design for our book that reflects one of our chosen themes.    

In class (9-20-19):  Students completed a quiz over yearbook terms and trivia.  Students indicated their preferences for the pages they would like to work on.  Students shared cover ideas for our proposed themes this year.  Assigned:  Complete the page you are duplicating from a LookBook or another yearbook.  Also design on the website a cover for our book that matches one of our proposed themes.  Continue to cover any sporting events this weekend as you are able, and talk photos at chapel on Monday.

In class (9-19-19):  Students worked on either duplicating a page from a yearbook or creating a cover for our book.  Assigned:  Continue covering school and sporting events as you are able, especially the events tomorrow at Charles Wright.  

In class (9-18-19):  Went over upcoming events that we need to cover.  Students listened to a presentation on good principles of photography.  Students shared what they learned from interviewing one another yesterday.  They also shared some of the interview questions that they wrote from yesterday's assignment.  Assigned:  Take pictures at today's Pep Assembly as well as at tomorrow's golf fund-raiser (if attending) or at school athletic events.

In class (9-17-19):  Went over events to be covered in the next few days.  Discussed tips for conducting interviews and how that can help us write good captions and articles.  Students practiced interviewing each other in class. Assigned:  Write out 10-15 sample interview questions (see handout). Due tomorrow.  Also continue sketching out cover ideas that visually represent one of our proposed themes.  

In class (9-16-19):  Went over the events that we need to attend and cover over the next few days.  Staff took photos and interviewed middle school students as they were photographed for Picture Day.  Discussed possible themes for our book and voted on our favorites.  Assigned:  Sketch out an idea or two of how these themes could be depicted visually/verbally on a cover.  Due tomorrow.

In class (9-13-19):  Discussed our ideas for a theme for this year's book and possible verbal and visual spin-offs.  Assigned: Take photos over the weekend at any of our sporting events.  Be prepared to take photos on Monday at chapel and also of students having their pictures taken at Picture Day. 

In class (9-12-19):  Went over the school and sporting events that we need to cover over the next few days by taking photos.  Brainstormed ideas for our theme.  Assigned:  Continue thinking about ideas for the theme of our yearbook.  Also continue to take photos at school and sporting events.

In class (9-11-19):  Went over calendar events to cover over the next few days.  Students continued to work on duplicating a page from a LookBook or a yearbook that illustrates good design.  Discussed some of the finished pages for their design elements.  Assigned:  Continue taking photos of sporting events and school activities.  Upload your photos into our Jostens website.  

In class (9-10-19):  Mr. Paffrath, our Jostens Representative, visited class today to help explain some of the elements of the new Jostens website that we are piloting:  "Layout Pro".  Assigned:  Continue taking photos of school events and classroom activities.

In class (9-19-19):  Went over events that we need to cover this week.  Discussed how well we did covering the Band Retreat and today's chapel.  Went to the lab to work on the new Jostens website.  Assigned:  Pick a layout with good design from one of the LookBooks or one of our old yearbooks and try to duplicate it.  Due Wednesday or Thursday.  

In class (9-6-19):  Collected summer interview sheets.  Went over what we need to cover over the next few days, especially Monday's chapel. Went to the computer lab and began training on the new Jostens yearbook website that we are piloting this year.  No assignment other than to cover/take photos at the events we discussed in class (sports/chapel/band retreat). 

In class (9-5-19):  Discussed last year's yearbook in terms of what pages we could leave out and what we might want to include in next year's book.  Discussed what is new here at LCA that we might want to include in this year's book.  Browsed LookBooks for ideas for new pages.  Set goals for this year's book.  Assigned:  Turn in your syllabus signature form by tomorrow.  Also complete your summer interviews by tomorrow, Friday Sept. 6.

In class (9-4-19):  Students shared some of the photos they have taken during these first days of school.  Students were trained in the computer lab on some beginning elements of good design using our Yearbook Avenue website.  No assignment.

In class (9-3-19):  Discussed the elements that make up a yearbook.  Students filled out a staff profile sheet including their current class schedule and interests/hobbies.  Discussed events that we need to cover during the month of September.  Introduced the concept of a ladder which plans out all of the pages in our yearbook.  Assigned:  Take pictures in your classes and at school events.  Complete your summer interviews.  Due Friday.

In Class:  Collected song/playlist.  Discussed how to cover the pep assembly today, what pictures to take, where to take them,etc.  Went over suggestions for improving our yearbook from last year's evaluations.  Began to brainstorm ideas for new human interest pages.  Set up student accounts on Yearbook Avenue.  Assigned:  Keep taking pictures at school these first days of school.  Syllabus signature forms are due on Sept. 6th.  Summer interviews are also due on Sept. 6th.

In class:  Discussed what makes up a yearbook and what makes for good design.  Began introducing design terminology and the basic elements of good design.  Presented examples of good design, and students searched through sample yearbooks to find examples of good design.  Assigned:  Keep taking photos throughout the day as coverage for the first days of school.  Syllabus signature forms are due on Friday, Sept. 6.
